Pompeu Casanovas

Pompeu Casanovas is Director of Advanced Research and Professor of Philosophy and Sociology of Law at Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB Faculty of Law), and founder and Head of the UAB Institute of Law and Technology (IDT-UAB). At present, he is also Research Professor at La Trobe University and Key Researcher of the Australian government-funded Data to Decisions CRC Project. He was appointed Professorial Research Fellow at Deakin University in 2016, and since 2014 onwards, Honorary Professor at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

He has been Principal Investigator in over 50 national, European, and international projects. He has published over 10 books and more than 200 scientific articles in the areas of legal philosophy, legal sociology, intellectual history, pragmatics, and Artificial Intelligence & Law. His recent publications include regulatory models to implement security, privacy, and data protection. His research interests comprise both cyber-security to fight organized crime, and Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) and crowdsourcing to protect rights and foster citizens’ political participation.

He is currenty General Co-Editor of the Law, Governance and Technology Series (LGTS, Springer Verlag), the Journal of Open Access to Law (JOAL, University of Cornell), and the Journal of Catalan Intellectual History (de Gruyter Open). He belongs to the Scientific Board of Directors of the European Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Law, Science and Technology (2012-2017), and is serving at the JURIX Steering Committee.

Pompeu Casanovas had a Spanish and French education (Alliance Française). He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy, and Degrees in Law (UAB) and in Philosophy (UAB). He carried out post-doctoral research at the universities of Bari (and Rome, 1987), University of California San Diego-UCSD (1990-91-92), and Stanford University (2000-2001). He has been Visiting Professor in many universities and research centres: CNRS (France, 1994-1997, 2005), University of Bologna (CIRSFID, 2006), CNR-Bologna (IRSIG, 2006), Victoria University (Melbourne, 2012-2013). From 1995 to 2008 he served as Consultant of Legal Methodology, Artificial Intelligence, and Professor at the PhD Programme of the Open University of Catalonia.
